Tallinn Town Hall
Tallinn
Town Hall is a Gothic monument that dates back to the 13th century
and housed the management of the city for more than 700 years. Since
1975 it has been the showpiece of the city, and since Estonia's
independence in 1991, has held receptions for many crowned heads,
dignitaries and celebrities.
The oblong two-storey building is made of local limestone and covered
by a high-pitched roof resting on steep gables. The main facade
is topped with a decorative crenellated parapet with gargoyles in
the shape of dragon's heads. A slender octagonal tower emerges from
the eastern wall, crowned by a late Renaissance spire, topped by
a weathervane with the figure of a squire, known as Old Thomas.
